Riomaggiore, like the other villages of the Cinque Terre, is hugged between the Ligurian sea and the steep mountain chain which detaches from the Apennines. Its historic centre is situated in the stream valley of Rio Maggiore and dates back to the 18th century.
It extends along two valleys which is separated by the ripid Campione coast. The three peaks of Mount Verugola , which are depicted in the town emblem have always been the symbol of this village.
The territory is part of the Cinque Terre National Park.
In Riomaggiore there are numerous churches and momuments to visit:
The Guardiola Tower, today a naturalistic park, was once one of the most equipped forts of the area.
Riomaggiore Castle, also known as Castellazzo di Cerricò The surrounding wall includes two large round towers. In 1800 the interior was filled with soil and later on became a cemetary.
The church of San Giovanni Battista, 1341, whose facade was restructured in neo-gothic style in 1820.
Also worth a visit is the parish church of San Lorenzo with its gothic style facade.
We recommend a visit to the Sciacchetrà Museum, dedicated to the history of the famous sciacchetrà wine.
Riomaggiore can be reached on foot by two main marked paths. The first is the ridge path number 1, known as the highway of the Cinque Terre. This old mule track runs along the watershed which separates the riviera from the Val di Var.
Another path is the “azzurro” (blue) which goes through the entire Ligurian Riviera which in turn goes through all the Cinque Terre from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, also crossing the celebrated Via dell’Amore( lover’s walk).
As Riomaggiore is part of the National Park of the Cinque Terre we include a link to the park site which holds photos immortalizing these stupendous places and numerous suggested itineraries:

The Feastday of San Giovanni, June 24
Among the most important events in Riomaggiore is the “Sagra d’Uva” (grape festival) a challenge among the different districts of the village held during harvest time. Unfortunately it has not been celebrated since 1991.
