San Terenzo is a small seaside village and a district of the municipality of Lerici, once relying entirely on trade it is now a popular destination for tourists and bathers.
The village has always attracted the attention of romantic English artists even way back in the early 1800s. Villa Magni, which was once a 16th century monastery ,was also where Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley with their child Percy Florence resided from April to September 1822 when the property belonged to the Marchese of Ollandini. Here Shelley left by boat for Livorno to meet up with Leigh Hunt , his publisher friend, to discuss the launching of “The Liberal” which was created by Shelley and backed by Byron. Unfortunately, on the 8 July 1822 , on his passage back to Livorno, the ship wrecked during a storm; Shelly’s body was found ten days later. Mary Shelley remained in San Terenzo until mid-september.
The castle of San Terenzo rises on a rocky spur on the western end of the bay. It was built by the inhabitants in 1400 and said to have been built as a defense against Saracen and pirate raids, this is why the grotto below is called “Tana dei Turchi” ( The Turks’ Lair).
San Terenzo is one of the viallages which takes part in the Palio del Golfo (Gulf inter-district race).

An example of one of the itineraries is: San Terenzo - Falconara - Santa Teresa - San Terenzo, which takes about 1 hour and 45 mins.
You can enjoy a wonderful view from Falconara hill, legend has it that a knight of the crusades may have been buried there.
From Falconara you can go down to Pozzuolo and then on to Forte dei Pianelloni and the 1500 fort of Santa Teresa which today is the site of the sailing school.
Another itinerary is: Lerici - Pugliola - Solaro - San Terenzo, which takes about 1 hour and 30 mins
Going up along via Canata you reach Barcola where the road strays away from the sea and leads to Pugliola.
Going past the village you come to an ancient 13th century settlement and then proceed on towards Solaro.
Here we arrive at the “Orto Magico” (the magic kitchen garden) together with terracing and walled in baths, in roman times probably part of the baths or spa.
On reaching Solaro and going through the old village you pass through the the typical ligurian vegetable gardens which finally lead you to San Terenzo.
