Millesimo is an ancient village on the banks of the Bormida and still preserves the “Gaietta” or “ponte vecchio”(old bridge), a rare example of an early middle ages fortified bridge. The village has a characteristic triangular shape, whose centre culminates in the castle and whose base is the Del Carretto Palace. Probably inhabited in the roman period, Millesimo was part of the aleramica border district and belonged to Bonifacio del Vasto (1091). Later it became the centre of power of the Marquis del Carretto and in the 15th century it passed on to the Visconti of Milan. Millesimo, in a period of 20 years, 1639-1659, endured Spanish domination and in the 1800s it became part of the Reign of Savoia.
On 13th and14th April 1796 two important battles were fought in Milessimo and Cosseria, where a garrison from Piedmont led by Filippo Del Carretto (deceased in battle), managed to stop the advancement of the napoleonic troops for two days.
The local craftsmanship is one of the main characteristics of the village, with the production of objects in wrought iron, copper and sandstone. It is the town of truffle and so organises every year in September an important feast dedicated to this speciality. Not to be missed is the Natural park of Bric Tana and the Valley of the Tre Re (Three Kings) where it is possible to do various activities, like trekking and excursions. Moreover , recent excavations have brought to light evidence from the Bronze Age which would confirm the presence of a prehistoric tribe in this area.
